1st Bac English Diagnostic Test: Editable Word Document (.docx)
A practical 20-mark baseline test built around social media, modern lifestyle vocabulary, core tenses, and career writing for incoming 1st Bac students.

When students move from Tronc Commun into the 1st Year of Baccalaureate (1ère Année Bac), their English skills are often split. Some arrive with good conversational exposure from social media and mobile apps, while others still mix up basic Present Perfect forms and subject-verb agreement. Jumping straight into textbooks like Ticket 1 to English or Gateway to English 1 without a diagnostic check usually leads to pacing trouble by Unit 2.
This 1st Bac English diagnostic test is designed to solve that problem. Instead of using generic or outdated passages, it uses a text about digital habits (TikTok, Instagram, and screentime boundaries) that teenagers actually relate to. It fits on a single double-sided sheet, scores out of 20 marks, and includes an editable Word document so you can adapt the questions for your own high school.

What This Diagnostic Test Covers
Reading Comprehension (5 pts): Short text (“The Power of Social Media”) featuring Sara’s daily online habits, language learning through tutorials, and turning off phone alerts at night. Includes True/False with justification, two open-ended questions, and synonym matching (risky = dangerous).
Vocabulary (4 pts): Tests technology words like addicted, tutorial, privacy, platform, plus an environment and society fill-in-the-blank task using words like recycle, pollution, hobby, volunteer.
Grammar (5 pts): Multiple-choice checks on Present Perfect with since, obligation modal must, and comparative adjectives (better than). The second part targets four common errors: 3rd-person singular negation, demonstrative agreement (These is), negative determiners (some / any), and past participle confusion (have saw).
Communication Functions (2 pts): Pragmatic dialogues checking whether students know how to express an opinion on school phone bans and how to give practical advice for an interview.
Guided Writing (4 pts): Short personal composition task asking students to describe their dream job and explain their reasons. Great indicator of sentence linking and vocabulary range.
Teacher Observations from the First Week
💡 Watch Out for Participle Confusion: In Section C, Question II.4 (“I have saw this movie before”), students often fail to spot irregular participle errors. If more than half the class misses this, plan a 15-minute irregular verb warm-up before tackling past narratives.
💡 Justification Habit in Reading: In Section A, remind students to copy the exact clue sentence when marking True or False. This builds the proper test habit early for their upcoming continuous assessments.
💡 Quick Writing Diagnostic: Grade Section E primarily on clarity and sentence transitions rather than minor spelling. It will immediately show you who can construct compound sentences and who is still writing word-for-word translated phrases.
