Common Core Unit 1 My Favourite Things Listening and Speaking Presentation Cover TeachersMap

Listening is the skill many of us skip in Common Core. Sometimes the official audio is too poor to use in a real classroom. Sometimes the content feels old and boring. And sometimes teachers simply aren’t sure how to run a listening lesson.

This Common Core Unit 1 listening and speaking presentation deals with all three. The audio is clear, high-quality and AI-generated, so students can hear it even at the back of a big class, and the content is modern: football stars, TV programmes and cars. Students use what they already studied in previous sessions, like the verb to be and his / her, so the lesson builds confidence instead of adding pressure. What’s Inside This Presentation

1. Before Listening: Look & Predict

Students look at pictures of sportsmen, TV programmes and cars, and answer warm-up questions like “Who is your favourite football player?”

2. First Listening: Choose the Correct Option

Students listen to Lisa, Jamil and Fred and choose the correct sportsman, TV programme and car. This is the gist task.

3. Second Listening: True or False

Students listen again and decide whether eight sentences are true or false. This is the detail task.

4. Speaking: Ask Your Partner

Pair work with question and answer models for favourite sportsman, TV programme and car. Student A asks, Student B answers, then they swap.

5. Tell Us About Your Partner

Students report three pieces of information to the class, using a sentence model and useful expressions like “He/She likes…” and “He/She enjoys…”

Delivery Tips

💡 Let Students Compare Before You Check: After each listening, give students a minute to compare answers with their neighbour. Weaker students get a second chance to catch what they missed, and checking goes faster.

💡 Keep Pair Work in the Seats: In a large class with fixed seating, students simply turn to the person next to them. Nobody has to move, and every student gets to speak.

💡 Differentiate the Reporting Task: Leave the sentence model on the board for weaker classes. For stronger classes, ask students to report five pieces of information instead of three.
